Skim plaster
The Benefits of Plaster Skim
Applying a layer of plaster skim to walls has some key advantages over the drywall, ‘mud and tape’ method, including:
Appearance – skimming enables finish walls to have a perfectly smooth surface in readiness for painting and decorating; but, as plaster skim (plaster veneer) dries to a mottled white colour, it can replicate a mirrored surface. For some interiors, this bare plaster finish can be particularly desirable. It is also possible to add tints to the plaster to enhance the colour of its appearance.
Moisture Resistant – plaster is an effective water barrier. When it is set, plaster skim is able to shed water, helping to reduce the build-up of mildew.
Time-Saving – unlike traditional plastering methods that require each layer of plaster to be completely dry before the next can be considered, plaster skimming can be completed in one session. Some wall surfaces may require longer drying allowances, such as lime finishes; however, with fewer steps to the process, skimming is considerably quicker.
No Sanding – when applied by professionals it is unlikely that imperfections will need to be sanded away. As a plaster skim can be carried out over five hours, any indentations from the application are removed before the plaster goes off. Drywall equivalents require, in some instances, mechanical sanding to achieve a fine surface finish.
